Frequently asked questions
Are there pool starts in Ecotrail Oslo?
Not at 80km and 50km. The other distances have a pool start, but informal. This is to avoid queues on the narrow sections of the trail. Speakers provide information about who will start in pools according to the estimated finish time. That is, the fastest start first. There are two people with ropes and "locks" the interval start. It is a math start, so it does not affect your time if you start as one of the last pools!
Trail record EcoTrail Oslo
From 2026, the last 10km will have more incline than before.
That means it will be exciting to see the outcome, whether anyone actually runs faster than previous course records, or how close it gets. We'll set a "new time reckoning" from 2026. :)
Track records and top 5 times
2022: The finish line was moved from Salt to Vippa, the entire course became approximately 650m shorter.
2023: New 1.8 km loop added 50 km in
2025: The start of the 80 km has now become a little shorter, it was moved 1 km further up the course, to Nedre Foss Park.
2025 - exception: The end of the route was approximately 300 meters longer for all distances due to cycling.
2026: New finish area at Huk, Bygdøy. The last 10km of all distances will have an ascent of 204m and a descent of 200m – compared to the previous 61m ascent and 60m descent - according to Strava's algorithms.

Is it possible to fill drinks at the start?
No. You must prepare at home, and be ready to start with a minimum of 0.6dl per hour you spend at the first drinking station.
How do I add a club or team name?
Log in to your profile, click edit. Add under club – or team. Click update.
When is the deadline to change a participant's name?
The number series with names will be made available two weeks before the race (in 2026). If you need to change at the last minute, the person who takes over the race with your name will still have their name on the results list.
How much to drink from the start – and along the way?
There is one rule that applies no matter what race you participate in: Drink some sports drink before you feel thirsty! Like 15-20 minutes into the race. It is not enough to rely on your thirst!
What also happens when you drink a little sports drink early on is that your stomach gets used to absorbing fluid and nutrition.
The sports drink is supplied by Fuel.
For example, drink 2dl three times an hour. If it is very hot, some people need to drink four times an hour, but this is mostly in street races when asphalt and the city are hotter than the field, where there is also shade from trees.
This drinking thing is individual. And training basis, weather and temperature also play a role. A general recommendation, and as the literature also shows, is that most people do not need more than 0.5 - 0.8L per hour. More than that is not recommended!
So how much you should bring from the start to the first drink station depends entirely on how long you spend, how demanding the route is – and what time of day it is.
It gets hotter in the middle of the day!
80km has five stations
From the start (7am) it is just over 13 km to the first drinking station at Maridalen Church. Calculate a minimum of 0.5L per hour.
From Maridalen Church to the Holmenkollen food and drink station it is just under 20km. Two steep climbs (Fagervann and Vettakollen) Calculate a minimum of 0.6L per hour.
From Holmenkollen it is just under 20km to the food and drink station in Sørkedalen. Calculate a minimum of 0.6L per hour.
From Sørkedalen to Fossum food and drink station it is 10km. The first 3km is continuous climbing. Calculate minimum 0.6L per hour.
From Fossum to Thaugland drinking stations it is approximately 11 km. The route is hilly and technical in places. Calculate a minimum of 0.6L per hour.
From Thaugland to the finish line it is just under 9km. Calculate a minimum of 0.6L per hour you will use to reach the finish line. Be aware of the temperature too!
50km has three stations
From the start to the first drinking and food station in Sørkedalen it is just under 20km. Calculate a minimum of 0.6L per hour you use.
From Sørkedalen to Fossum food and drink station it is 10 km. The first 3km is continuous ascent. Calculate minimum 0.6L per hour.
From Fossum to Thaugland drinking station it is approximately 11km. The route is hilly and technical in places. Calculate a minimum of 0.6L per hour.
From Thaugland to the finish line it is just under 9km. Calculate a minimum of 0.6L per hour you will use to reach the finish line. Be aware of the temperature too!
31km has two stations
From the start to the first food and drink station at Fossum it is 10 km. The first 3km are continuous climbs. Calculate a minimum of 0.6L per hour.
From Fossum to Thaugland drinking station it is approximately 11km. The route is hilly and technical in places! Calculate a minimum of 0.6L per hour.
From Thaugland to the finish line it is just under 9km. Calculate a minimum of 0.6L per hour you will use to reach the finish line. Be aware of the temperature too!
21km has a station
From the start to the Thaugland drinking station it is approximately 11km. The route is hilly and technical in places! Calculate a minimum of 0.6L per hour.
From Thaugland to the finish line it is just under 9km. Calculate a minimum of 0.6L per hour you will use to reach the finish line. Be aware of the temperature too!
10km "has a station"
10 km will meet the drinking station after just under 2km.
In any case, you must calculate a minimum of 0.6L per hour from the start.
By the way, are there bananas and food at the last drink station?
No. There, a banana won't be of much use other than to satisfy any hunger. Fructose/fruit sugar irritates the intestines if there is too much of it, but it is also a carbohydrate that has to go through a few detours before the body can use it. First it is absorbed, then it goes to the liver and there it is converted into glucose (dextrose). So it takes some time before the muscles can use it.
A drop, gel, or gum on your tongue can actually have just as much of an effect as a banana at the end of a race. The advantage is that you don't have to have it in your stomach.
So there will be snacks, and chocolate for those who feel hungry, instead of bananas at the last station. That will also save us 4,000 smelly and long-traveled banana peels.
At the finish line there is also water and sports drinks. And lots more snacks and miscellaneous items.
When does luggage go from start to finish?
You will be transported one bag from start to finish.
On your start number there is a luggage tag that you tear off and attach to the bag you want to have transported to the finish line.
The number on that tag corresponds to your starting number. At the finish line, a friendly group will be there to find your bag.
For 10 km, the truck leaves with all the bags 30 minutes before the start.
At 21 km there are three trucks, they leave 30 minutes before the start.
at 31 km there are two trucks, one leaves 30 minutes before the start and the other immediately after the last shuttle bus has delivered late participants at 10:45 :)
For 80 km and 50 km, luggage will be transported immediately after the start. However, you must hand in your bag no later than 15 minutes before the start!
We are not responsible for the contents of the bag, but we will look after the bag for you. Pack the contents in something waterproof in case of rain!
PS! If you have family and friends who will meet you at the finish line, you can give them the luggage tag and they can pick up your bag for you.
Some queueing at baggage claim in the middle of the day must be expected!
How do I change distance?
First, you need to check if the distance you want to change to still has available places. You can check this by clicking on "registration". For example, if 80km and 50km are not shown there, it means that the distances are sold out.
If the distance you want to change to is still open, you should now carefully read how to proceed:
First you need to log in via participant login - you can find it on the same page as Registration.
Forgot your password? Remember to check your spam folder if you request a new password.

What are the event rules in Ecotrail Oslo?
You MUST read them. And you can do that here.
Is it allowed to use spells?
Yes :) And of course it is not mandatory within walking distance!
Will the trail be marked?
The trail is marked only with crosses. Signs and field flags on the ground. Some field flags are yellow, others are white. The arrow signs are yellow and some are green.
In addition, white arrows are marked on the ground where there is asphalt (environmentally friendly spray) at some intersections. The trail is only marked at and off intersections and road junctions.
Do you have first aid on the course or at the finish line?
We have two ambulances from Norwegian People's Aid on duty, with Fossum and Lysakerelva as the starting point. One will be based in the finish area from the end of the day. We will also notify Norwegian Air Ambulance about the event. Otherwise, we remind you that you participate at your own risk, but if an accident should occur, you must call the telephone numbers listed on the start number. If there are no fractures or life-threatening injuries, you must find out where the nearest transport point is.
Is it math start and midterms?
Yes. There will also be a registration for intermediate times out on Bygdøy (where locals know where to take a shortcut before it), so those who are not registered there will not have their time approved, and will be left with a blank finish time.
Is the trail controlled?
No. Our course goes through Nordmarka, Bærumsmarka and the city. It will not be timed, but it is tracked with different watches from different manufacturers. The distances are named after the nearest round number we have averaged after the runs we have taken with quite a few watches on our wrists.
Can someone else pick up my bib number for me?
Yes. But you must show the person's text message or email with the assigned number.
Medical certificate and license?
You participate at your own risk and do not need a doctor's certificate to participate in Ecotrail Oslo.
Ecotrail Norway pays many local sports clubs that work for us during our races, but we are not a member of sports clubs under the Norwegian Athletics Federation. We therefore do not require a license from our participants. Should you be injured that requires physical treatment, for example, your ordinary accident insurance / travel insurance should cover this, and these ordinary insurances usually cover far more than the insurance scheme through the one-time license of the Norwegian Athletics Federation. Some travel insurances also cover the binding entry fee (which you will not be refunded by the organizer) in the event of an injury before the race.

What's the deal with cut offs?
We must have a maximum time, or cut off, to ensure safety - and we must comply with agreements with landowners, hired workers, and more.
For example, we cannot keep Norwegian People's Aid indefinitely. We rent them for a fixed period of time.
If you don't make it to the maximum time, you've signed up for a distance that's too long for you - so long...:)
If you already know before the race that you can't manage the maximum time, choose a shorter distance.
Check when the food stations you pass close. If you don't make it to it, you probably won't make it to the finish line. The timing mats at the food stations will also be cleared.
We'll clear the finish area at 8pm, then we'll pack up. But the timing mat will be there until 8:30pm, in case anyone needs extra time for the last mile.
If you arrive at the finish line after 8 pm, the party is over and the hired officials have gone home - but your time will be recorded.
Remember to have a fully charged mobile phone (mandatory for ultra-distances) - you must send a text message if you break the race or if you realize you won't make the cut off and break at the nearest bus/tram.
The organizer's mobile number is on the start number. You will then get DNF on the results list. DNF is Did Not Finish.
Where are the toilets?
We rent toilets for the starting areas.
Otherwise, there are no toilets along the trail. Bring toilet paper if you tend to have a hard time with your stomach!
Always carry some toilet paper with you.
If you have to defecate during the race, step off the path and cover it with heather/moss/soil when you are finished.
It is not allowed to relieve yourself in other people's gardens!
80km passes toilets at the food stations in Holmenkollen, Sørkedalen, and Fossum. And at Sollerudstranda, 10 km before the finish.
50 km passes toilets at the food stations in Sørkedalen and Fossum. And at Sollerudstranda 10km before the finish.
31 km passes toilets at the food station at Fossum. And at Sollerudstranda 10km before the finish.
21 km and the Walk passes toilets at Sollerudstranda, after 10 km.
10 km passes no toilets.
Many permanent toilets at the finish line at Huk, Bygdøy.
SUPPORT: WHAT AND WHERE IS LAW AND NOT LAW?
Any form of support (shoe change, food, etc.) is only allowed at the food/drink stations. If you receive support outside of the drink/food stations, it is cheating and disqualification.
It is not allowed to have "hare" without a start number, or friends without a start number running with you.
Corporate teams are also not allowed to set up their own drinking stations.
If you want to change shoes between stations, you must carry your shoes with you throughout the race. There are no drop bag points.
Why do I have to provide an estimated time in my registration?
To be able to do a flow analysis before the race. Both for safety and to provide information to officials when they can expect a pressure...
It has nothing to do with pool starts. Pool starts were only during covid. But in the starting areas, the announcer will still ask the fastest to start first to avoid queues. A few minute start intervals, informal.
Are there photographers on the trail?
Yes, at several nice points along the course. They take pictures of all the runners. That is, if you don't have your start number in front, it won't be possible for you to look up pictures of yourself. In any case, it is mandatory to have your start number in front, for safety reasons, among other things.
The photos are taken by Sportograf, and they will be available within 24-48 hours after the race.
We use some of the images in our channels. If you do not want your image to be used by us, please contact us!
In addition, we have our own video team, who has a good plan for the day :-)
There are also other hired photographers who take atmospheric photos in the start and finish areas.
Where are the food/support stations and what is served there?
It depends on what distance you run.
80KM has five stations. That is, all the stations listed below.
50 km has three stations: Sørkedalen, Fossum and Thaugland.
31 km has two stations: Fossum and Thaugland.
21km has a station.Thaugland.
The 10km has one station - just 1.8km from the start. It is the Thaugland drinking station, and is therefore the last station for all distances.
SPORTS DRINKS ARE SUPPLIED BY FUEL OF NORWAY.
PS! AT STATIONS IT MAY OCCUR WHEN SOMETHING IS OUT OF STOCK AND IS REPLACED BY SOMETHING ELSE. YOU DON'T WANT TO BE PACKED..:)
Drinks at all stations are served from jugs. You must bring your own drinking system, whether it's a bladder, soft drink bottle or cup. Ask for help filling your bladder if you have trouble with the tap:) No cups are handed out in the Ecotrail! Not even at the finish line.

Where can I pick up lost belongings?
When we clear the finish area from 8pm, we will place forgotten items from the start and finish area somewhere at Huk. Please contact us for details.
We do not have the capacity to reship or deliver forgotten items. Nor do we have space in the cars, as they are packed with equipment.
You have to remember to bring your own things. :)
Why are start numbers not sent to the start areas?
WE have Print on Demand. This means that we rent special machines that print your start number only when you pick it up. It is more environmentally friendly than pre-printed numbers that have to be packed in envelopes and transported in boxes.
The machines cannot be spread out across all the starting areas on race day.
It is also good to remember that Ecotrail Oslo is a local race. The place where all start numbers are handed out is located near the subway, bus, tram and city bikes. It is also possible to pick up start numbers for one or more friends.
Visitors to the capital must find their own most suitable itinerary in relation to picking up their start number and starting time for their distance. Plan your trip on e.g. Ruter.no
The only exception is 80km. Uncollected start numbers on Friday at 7pm before race day will be printed out and taken to the start area on Saturday morning at 6:15am.
What kind of shoes are best suited for Ecotrail Oslo?
It all depends on what distance you are going to run.
And what the conditions are like. Will it be wet, will it be dry?
If you are going to run 10km you don't need off-road shoes. That route is on gravel and asphalt. The other distances will go through several sections of technical trail, and maybe slippery roots if it is wet.
All distances will be run on gravel and asphalt for the last 5 km.
Otherwise, 80km, 50km, 31km and 21km have a mix of gravel, asphalt, trails and technical trails. If it's dry, it's perfectly fine to run with a "road-oriented" shoe.
If it's wet, it's good to have a sole that provides grip.
We have a shoe partner and they are called Hoka. So the following text below goes under "advertisement".
But the two guys who work with Hoka shoes in Norway are avid runners themselves (and incidentally winners of our 50, 31 and 21 km)
They say that their recommendations below will actually apply to most distances. But if the conditions are dry, you might be able to afford to choose a bit more road-oriented, especially for 10km.
Regardless,
Tecton X 2 / Tecton X is their top recommendation. And then they add a couple of other options that may be relevant:
Tecton X 2 / Tecton X
Here you get a shoe packed with features that are perfect for Ecotrail. A well-cushioned, yet responsive midsole will take good care of your legs whether you run long or a little shorter. The outsole has 4 mm Vibram Megagrip lugs that ensure good grip on the trails. In addition, this shoe has carbon plates, which will both protect and give you a very good response in your stride. The upper provides good foot support and there is plenty of room for the toes in the front of the last. This shoe was used by the winners of both 50 km and 31 km last year, so there is no doubt that this is a good choice for Ecotrail. You can buy this shoe from Anton Sport during the start number handover!

Well-cushioned trail shoe with a responsive midsole. With this shoe you are assured of very good grip during the run, and can therefore be a sensible choice if the conditions become wet/slippery. A robust shoe that will take good care of your legs if you run one of the longer distances!
Speedgoat 5
Solid and well-cushioned off-road shoe with very good grip. Speedgoat is a real workhorse in the terrain, and will be a good choice for those who prioritize comfort and stability on the trail. The shoe is so well-cushioned that it will withstand the transport stage the last km on asphalt, even though it is an off-road shoe.
Torrent 3
Do you want a slightly lower shoe and more contact with the ground? Then the Torrent 3 is a good choice! Here we have a light and flexible shoe with a responsive midsole and you get good contact with the ground on the trail. Perhaps especially relevant for the slightly shorter distances.
Can I get a refund for my entry fee or move it to next year - or to another race?
No, ticket purchases are binding, in line with festivals, theaters, cinemas, etc. You can easily sell your starting number to another person, but you must find it yourself - and this is done by mutual settlement.
See more about this under a separate topic here in the FAQ.
It is also not possible to move to next year, each year has separate registration, budget and number of prizes. The same applies to the "new cities" Ecotrail Trondheim and Ecotrail Bergen. It is not possible to move registration between cities.
It is important that you read more about this in the event rules.
Do you have gift cards?
We have gift certificates for every distance!
When you purchase a gift card, you register your own email address. There you will receive the gift card as a PDF and a code that the recipient of the gift card will use when they eventually sign up.
Remember to check your spam folder after you have purchased the gift card! The email with the gift card and code may end up there...
Gift cards are purchased on the registration page. Scroll down on that page and select Gift Cards.
When is the deadline for registration?
Registration is open until race day, as long as it is not sold out.
Can I register a team/company/multiple participants in one registration against invoice?
Yes, but the company must have more than five registrations and an organization number. Contact us by email or call, and your team/company will receive a code!
I haven't received a confirmation email for my registration?
It takes a few minutes for the confirmation email to arrive when you register. It usually ends up in your spam folder.
If you do not receive an automatic email from registration, you may have entered the wrong email address.
Experience also shows that those who use HOTMAIL do not receive email, perhaps because the spam filter is strict. If you have another email address, it is recommended that you log in and change to an email address that is not hotmail.
Remember to click update when you have made changes to your profile!
Also check the Participant List if you have not received an email. The Participant List can be found on the same page where you register, scroll down a bit and see Participant Login, Participant List and more.
Where can I buy the popular Devold running shirt for Ecotrail?
Our jersey shop is closing down because there is too much administration. Anton Sport is taking over the sales - on their online store and in the physical store. Especially at the start number distribution you will find all the jerseys, including this year's new ones, in the store at Bogstadveien 2.
Something you can't find an answer to?
Still can't find an answer?
If you have gone through the menu and read all the information and really spent time reading, but still can't find an answer – get in touch!
You may have to allow a week for a response. Enquiries also often end up in spam, which can take even longer.
Unfortunately, there is no capacity to follow up with participants individually regarding training, diet, shoes and other equipment.
