Ecotrail Bergen - beautiful and hard trail
Ecotrail is coming to Western Norway for the first time!
On Saturday, June 27, 2026, Ecotrail Bergen will be held with four distances. The longest distance offers more than 4,200 meters of elevation gain and takes runners through forests, mountains, gravel roads and trails – all the way from fjord to fjord.
You might think that finding good Ecotrail trails in Bergen wouldn't be particularly challenging. But it took time to find something that really brought out the wild, the close, and the spectacular. Bergen is Bergen after all, and we wanted to create a trail that stays within Bergen municipality as much as possible – and that also showcases the best the city has to offer.
The work of developing the trails has taken place in close dialogue with some of Bergen's most accomplished runners and outdoor enthusiasts. Among the contributors are Jan Fjærestad, former national team athlete in both orienteering and athletics, and mountain runner Stian Angermund.
Ultra-runner organizer and professor at the University of Bergen, Einar Iversen, has also contributed with advice along the way. The route itself was mainly developed in collaboration with Geir Heksem, orienteer and team leader for the planning and geodata department at Norkart's Bergen office. And ultra-runner Gjermund Sørstad has pulled the strings and kept the dialogue with everyone under control. We have encountered several challenges along the way, but with Heksem's map and local expertise, we have landed something we believe has become ultra-fine!
The trails are based on parts of Bergen's popular anniversary trail, established in connection with the city's 950th anniversary in 2020.
The goal has been to create a route through a diverse natural and cultural landscape with high runnability and great nature experiences.
Many have pointed out how high quality the anniversary trail is, but at the same time there are still many Bergen residents who are not familiar enough with this fantastic route. Ecotrail Bergen will therefore also be a unique opportunity to discover new paths and trails in your own city.
Participants pass through areas such as Espeland, Åsane and Fløyen. On the longest distances, runners will visit Åsane twice before starting the climb towards Vikinghytten and further towards Fløyen.
From Fløyen, the tour descends towards the city center, where the finish line is at Vågsallmenningen. In short, an experience through Bergen's heartland of mountains, forests, trails and city life.
And since this is the first year, we will practice the logistics and infrastructure - there will be limited places. On June 16th, the start numbers will be printed, and only a few extra places per distance will be added.
